Under New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) containerization rules enacted across all five boroughs, all residential buildings with 1 to 9 units are required to place all trash out in secure, rigid plastic containers with tight-fitting, latching lids. Leaving loose plastic garbage bags directly on sidewalks is strictly prohibited. Bins can hold a maximum of 55 gallons. Starting in summer 2026, single-family and multi-family homes up to 9 units must use the official NYC Bin purchased through the city's vendor. Bins can be placed at the curb after 6:00 PM if containerized, or after 8:00 PM for bundle recyclables. Violations carry progressive fines starting at 50 dollars.
